The Refugees (Viet Thanh Nguyen)

This collection, penned before but published after Nguyen's debut novel The Sympathizer, is composed of a series of stories that chrinocle the various aspects of what it means to be a refugee. While this is an especially relevant topic in the United States today, in the wake of Executive Order 13769, Nguyen's book focuses (literally, anyway) on refugees of the Vietnam War / American War.

The stories are moving, sometimes on an intellectual and sometimes on an emotional level. They provide windows into different kinds of refugee experiences, the intergenerarional effects of those experiences, and the multi-faceted consequences of being a refugee.
